Guildford uses three main household bins: the green recycling bin, the black refuse bin, and the outdoor food caddy. You can also leave extra recycling, textiles, small electrical items, and batteries next to your bins in the right way.
| Bin/item | What goes in it | How to present it |
|---|---|---|
| Green recycling bin | Paper, card, newspapers and magazines; glass bottles and jars; empty tins, cans and cartons; empty aerosol cans; clean foil and foil trays; plastic bottles, tubs, pots and trays; plastic carrier bags; plastic and metal lids, caps and bottle tops | Put extra recycling neatly at the side of the bin in a see-through plastic bag |
| Black refuse bin | General waste that cannot go in your green bin | Put only the rubbish that can’t be recycled in the green bin |
| Outdoor food caddy | Meat and fish, including bones; shells of fish, nuts and eggs; dairy food; fruit and vegetables; bread, cakes and pastries; rice, pasta and beans; leftover, mouldy or expired food; tea bags and tea and coffee grounds | Do not line the silver food bin with black bin liners; use plastic liners, newspaper or old carrier bags if you want to line it |
| Textiles | Textiles | Leave neatly next to your bins in a carrier bag and keep them dry |
| Small electrical items | Small electrical appliances | Leave neatly next to your bins |
| Batteries | Batteries | Put them in a small clear plastic bag and place them on top of your bin |
Guildford says to only put out bins issued by the council, and unless you have an assisted collection, leave them at your collection point — usually at the edge of your property closest to the road. For your actual collection day, use Find my bin day.
