Oldham uses a four-bin system: grey for general rubbish, blue for paper and card, brown for glass, cans, tins and plastic bottles, and green for food and garden waste. The key thing is that the collection day changes by bin, and the 6-7-8 rule applies to all of them.
| Bin | What goes in it | Collection pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Grey bin | Rubbish that can’t be recycled, including nappies, polystyrene, plastic bags and film, other household plastics such as plant pots, lids from glass jars and bottles, wrapped broken crockery and glassware, and other broken non-electrical household items | Collected every three weeks |
| Blue bin | Paper and card, food and drinks cartons, egg boxes, cardboard, card packaging, newspapers, magazines, brochures, envelopes and junk mail | Collected every three weeks |
| Brown bin | Plastic pots, tubs and trays, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, food tins and drink cans, aerosols, foil | Collected every three weeks |
| Green bin | Food and garden waste, tea bags and coffee grounds, fruit and vegetables, grass, flowers, hedge and plant cuttings, out-of-date food, meat and bones, breads and pastries, dairy and egg shells, all cooked and uncooked food | Collected weekly |
Put your bin out after 6pm the day before collection, have it out by 7am on collection day, and bring it back in by 8am the day after collection. If you’re not sure which day your bins are due, Oldham has a bin collection dates checker on its website.
