Southend says you apply for Housing Benefit online through the Citizen Access Benefits portal. Before you submit, make sure you have the right proof ready, because the claim won’t start processing without it.
| What you need | Details |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | Citizen Access Benefits portal |
| Proof of identity | Birth certificate, passport or driving licence |
| Proof of where you live | Tenancy agreement or letter from head of household |
| Rent evidence | Up to date rent payment statement from your landlord, if you’re currently renting |
| Proof of income | Bank statements, benefits letters |
| Extra evidence | Any supporting evidence for your housing need, and medical evidence if relevant |
Southend also says you should include proof for any other adult living in the property, and you’ll have one calendar month to provide any missing proof after submitting the form. If you’re claiming backdated Housing Benefit, you need to use the same online application form and explain why you didn’t claim earlier.
