To apply for a council house in Birmingham, you need to apply for social housing through Birmingham Choice. Birmingham says only people with a housing need can join the housing register, and your application will be assessed to see if you’re eligible, what priority band you’re in, and how many bedrooms you’re entitled to.
| What Birmingham looks at | What it means |
|---|---|
| Legal right to live in the UK | You can apply if you have the legal right to live in the UK |
| Housing need | Your current accommodation must not be suitable for you or someone in your household |
| Eligibility | An officer checks whether you can join the housing register |
| Priority banding | Birmingham decides what priority your household gets |
| Bedroom entitlement | Birmingham checks how many bedrooms your household is entitled to |

Birmingham also notes that joining the register doesn’t guarantee a quick move, or a home in your preferred area or property type.
