Hull uses three main household bins: blue for recycling, brown for food and garden waste, and black for general waste. The collection day for each bin is your usual route day, and there are some limits on how and when they’re emptied.
| Bin | What goes in it | Collection pattern | When to put it out | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue bin | Paper, cardboard, catalogues, magazines, books, empty tins and cans, empty aerosols, clean kitchen foil, empty plastic bottles, empty food containers, empty food and drinks cartons, empty glass bottles and jars, empty carrier bags, empty non-black plastic plant pots | Every 2 weeks | By 7am at the boundary of your property, with the handle facing towards the road | Items must be loose and clean; no black bin or brown bin waste; side waste can be put out in loosely tied clear bags, and cardboard must be kept dry |
| Brown bin | Food waste and garden waste such as meat, fish bones, peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells, grass cuttings, hedge cuttings, flowers, twigs, small branches, leaves, weeds, small shrubs, house plants, straw bedding | Every week | By 7am at the boundary of your property, with the handle facing towards the road | No side waste; do not overfill with heavy items; if your brown bin is missed, contact the council within 48 hours |
| Black bin | General waste not recycled, such as bagged waste, nappies, hygiene products, bagged cat and dog waste, polystyrene, hard plastics, bubble wrap, cling film, bread bags, freezer bags, crisp packets, toothpaste tubes, wallpaper, kitchen cloths, sponges, used kitchen roll, cigarette butts, vacuum cleaner waste | Every 2 weeks | By 7am at the boundary of your property, with the handle facing towards the road | No side waste; do not overfill with heavy items |
Brown bins should not contain soil, stones, rubble, pet waste, plastics, glass, wood, metal, plant pots, artificial grass, toys, clothes, or cardboard. Blue bins should not contain black bin or brown bin waste.
If you want, I can also set this out as a simple “what goes where” list for each bin.
