You can put a variety of food waste in your brown bin. If you are using it solely for food waste, no permit is required, and here's a helpful list of what you can include:
| Acceptable Food Waste | Notes |
|---|---|
| Solid food scraps | Includes leftover meals, plate scrapings |
| Fruit and vegetable peels | All types, including cores and rinds |
| Egg shells | Clean and unbroken |
| Tea bags and coffee grounds | Used bags and grounds |
| Meat and fish | Includes bones |
| Bread, cakes, and pastries | All types (not mouldy) |
However, be sure not to include any liquids, such as sauces or oils, as they can contaminate the waste. For proper collection, food waste should be placed either loose or in compostable bags that are marked with 'EN 13432' or 'BS EN 13432' — plastic bags are not accepted as they contaminate the waste.
