West Lothian’s brown bin takes food waste all the time, and garden waste too if you have a valid garden waste permit. Here’s the current list from published council information:
| You can put in the brown bin | Notes |
|---|---|
| Meat and bones | Food waste |
| Bread, cakes and pastry | Food waste |
| Cheese | Food waste |
| Fruit peelings | Food waste |
| Egg shells | Food waste |
| Pizza crusts | Food waste |
| Plate scrapings / plate leftovers | Food waste |
| Tea bags and coffee grounds | Food waste |
| Fish bones | Food waste |
| Grass cuttings | Garden waste, permit required |
| Leaves and twigs | Garden waste, permit required |

A few things to leave out: liquids like soup, sauces, milk, yoghurt or oil, plus plastic bags, bagged waste, soil, rubble, plant pots, wood, glass, and similar contamination. If you’re putting in garden waste, West Lothian says the bin needs a current permit.
