Housing Benefit is the council support that helps pay rent, and Harrow says most households now use Universal Credit instead. You can still claim it if you’re a pensioner, in temporary accommodation, or in certain types of specified accommodation.

You’ll need to provide information such as proof of rent and tenancy, and Harrow says you may also need two signed questionnaires plus evidence of care, support and supervision if you’re in specified accommodation. After you apply, Harrow aims to email you within 24 hours, give a first look within 10 working days, and make a decision within four weeks.
